At the point where the Caribbean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean on the Dominican Republic's east coast, you'll find Bavaro, boasting one of the Caribbean's greatest stretches of white sand beach. Here, coconut palms and mangroves back the wide beach, and a long offshore coral reef helps to keep the waters calm. Sunbathing, swimming and scuba diving are hugely popular pastimes alongside windsurfing and jet-skiing. Back on dry land, horse-riding, golf, and tennis are on offer. Despite a large number of resort hotels, the beach at Bavaro still manages to offer an idyllic Caribbean seascape for sunseekers. Nearby Ojos Indigenas Eco Park & Reserve is a protected coastal and inland habitat which more than 100 bird, and 500 plant, species call home. There are also 12 freshwater lagoons, three of which are open to wild swimming. Further afield is the subtropical forest and ancient cave drawings of Del Este National Park.
