Lux Grand Gaube, North Coast

This secluded and intimate hotel retreat sits on an isolated peninsula, to the north of Mauritius, overlooking the island of Coin de Mire. Two golden bays of sand, one adult-only, serve the hotel, and are framed by low-rise villas fringed with bougainvillea. Bustling markets and rum-tastings are available nearby.

Rooms, suites and villas are all sea-facing. Superior rooms offer a very decent amount of space, wellness junior suites are split-level, and ocean junior suites feature vintage bathtubs overlooking the sea. There are also three villas.

Dining experiences are shared between no fewer than six restaurants. The Palm Court, the main restaurant and bar, overlook the pool and the ocean and feature live cooking stations producing world cuisine. INTI features Peruvian cuisine flavours, whilst beachside wood-fired pizzas are a feature of Beach Rouge. Rustic Creole dishes and Turkish cuisine are also available. Cocktails are served from a vintage Citroen van, and a superb wine-tasting takes advantage of the hotel's 300 vintage wines served by the glass.

In addition to the adult-only pool on the tip of the peninsula there are two further swimming pools. Lux Me Spa is a particular highlight and there's a great on-site barber's and whiskey shop. Complimentary paddle boarding, water skiing and tennis are available, and a golf course is a short drive from the hotel. There's a cosy cinema too.

Workshops on phone photography and drone flying are other activities offered by the hotel, alongside private island hopping on a traditional pirogue boat and seaplane trips over the north coast.
