Lakaz Chamarel Exclusive Lodge, Chamarel

Undulating green hills and flower-filled topical gardens are features of this inland, island retreat which sits at an impressive altitude of four hundred metres. The sleepy village of Chamarel is ten minutes on foot, hiking, like the Black River Gorge, is on the doorstep, and access to Le Morne beach can be via a shuttle which runs three times a day, although many guests choose to hire a car.

This resort retreat features a combination of eco-lodges and suites, set out amongst grounds which are heady with the scents of hibiscus and frangipani and dotted with statues of deities. Each lodge and suite is individually designed and decorated in a bohemian style. Suites and lodges are located in the gardens, whilst the more private sea view suites are set on a steep hill with access by golf cart available. Suites come particularly recommended for their generous terraces and private pool.

Authentic Mauritian dishes and local, seasonal produce are features of the highly regarded indoor-outdoor restaurant. Enjoy candlelit dinners, sundowners overlooking the gardens, live music and a firepit.

Service is exemplary and is complemented by cookery lessons, yoga, meditation in a marquee overlooking a labyrinth, and bicycles for exploring. Although modest, the spa offers excellent massages. There are fifteen pools in total, thirteen of which are private to the suites and two are open to all residents.
