Explore Ibiza Town
Ibiza Town, also referred to as Eivissa, surprises many visitors to the island of Ibiza owing to its cultural heritage and the fact that it is an Unesco world heritage site.
The 13th century cathedral summarises much of the history of Ibiza's capital, it's a Catalan place of worship built on the site of a Roman Temple which later made way for a Mosque; Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans and Moors have all left their mark here.
The old town has enough architectural stimuli, and the La Marina and Sa Penya waterfront areas feature a covered market, lively bars and cafes, and a welcoming and friendly ambience. The Dalt Vila, or high town, has impregnable rampart walls, in places dating back more than 2000 years, surrounding a whitewashed citadel of quiet winding alleyways and quaint narrow streets. In 2008 work started to convert the Almudaina Castle at the summit of the high town into a parador, a luxury hotel, usually located in a historic building, and owned and administered by the Spanish government.
