Approximately half the island's population lives in Funchal and the centre of town is especially busy where the 16th century streets attempt to cope with 21st century traffic! Funchal is a great location for those looking for things to do in Madeira. Most of the hotels are located west of the city centre at Funchal Lido an important tourist area with shops, restaurants and cafes.

The style is changing, however, with colonial mansions being converted into luxurious hotels although many enclaves and the port still retain an old fashioned feel mixed with the commercial buzz of its working environment and the port area provides a fabulous vantage point to gaze at the rich (and sometimes famous) as cruise ships moor up for their overnight stops.

Getting Around
Funchal, as with many capital cities, can suffer from busy traffic at certain times of the day and in some areas traffic noise will be apparent.
