Explore Tangier

Tangier sits at the northern tip of Morocco where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea and, guarding the narrow Strait of Gibraltar, the city has for centuries been known as Europe's gateway to Africa; on a clear day the Spanish coast, and Rock of Gibraltar, can be spotted from the town.

In 1912 the city was turned into an International Zone and free port governed by a commission of foreign diplomats attracting European and American expatriates, exiles and adventurers; by the early 1950s the city's foreign communities accounted for nearly half the population.

During the war the city was a hothouse for international espionage and intrigue, and in the 1950's it acquired a reputation for extravagance and an 'anything goes' attitude until Tangier once again became part of Morocco in 1956. Since 1999 the city has undergone something of a renaissance and has been transformed into a vibrant, cosmopolitan and modern Mediterranean beach resort, yet retaining its historic, enduring charm and authenticity.
