South Coast Mauritius Holidays

The south coast of Mauritius plays host to beautiful white sand beaches, azure waters, verdant hills and spectacular viewing points. Hidden gems populate this southern area, with enchanting underwater landscapes, fascinating wildlife and a vibrant culture which displays the island's previous colonisation by the Dutch, French and British. Spanning from Blue Bay in the south east to Le Morne in the south west, the small size of the island makes exploring this region easy.

In the south east you'll find the popular Blue Bay. Home to the island's largest reef, the waters are filled with fifty kinds of coral and an abundance of tropical fish, making it a fantastic snorkelling location. Follow the coast east and discover an assortment of secluded beaches, picnic spots and photo opportunities at every turn. Venture inland and you'll find waterfalls and nature parks with giant turtles, crocodiles and protected birds such as the rare Mauritian Pink Pigeon.

At the centre of the island's south coast, Gris Gris Beach features beautiful views over the coastal cliffs. Continue along the coast and you'll find the historically rich village of Souillac which dates back to the French colonial period. Further inland, the island's history continues to unravel with a visit to the Bois Cheri Tea Plantation and Factory. Learn the history of the island's tea making and taste local specialties.

Five minutes from the tea factory, the sacred Grand Bassin can be found. An important Hindu pilgrimage site, the Maha Shivaratri festival sees great numbers of people journey to the area to make sacrifices to their God and pray for peace and prosperity. Reaching the south westerly corner, a unique natural phenomenon colours the soil in seven different shades.
