At the very bottom of the heel of Italy, Ugento is in an area of outstanding natural beauty; a 1600 hectare national park has been established here since 2007. The town itself lies just inland from the beach beautiful white sand beaches and crystal clear waters of the Ionian Sea. Its Neoclassical cathedral dates from 1855, but has the presence of a vast Greek temple. The Baroque church of San Benedetto is home to some ancient frescoes. As Ugento lies within an area of archaeological significance there are numerous artifacts and relics to see. The tight streets are decked with balconies and decorated palazzi and there is no shortage of shops and restaurants the town's population exceeds 12,000. The sandy beaches of Torre Mozza and Torre San Giovanni are close by.
