Croatia's third largest city, Rijeka, is one of its major ports and is also known as the gateway to Croatia's islands. The Korzo is the city's major promenade and the heart and ould of Rijeka. Running parallel with the Riva embankment, it is adorned with cafes, restaurants, shops and some of the city's most famous Habsburg-era buildings. The National Theatre is something of a national architectural treasure inside and out, with ceiling paintings by Gustav Klimt. Located on a hill above the city, the neighbourhood of Trsat offers breathtaking views across the city and Kvarner Bay, towards some of the city's oldest and most impressive attractions. Rijeka is home to a number of pretty beaches and Opatija, the original Croatian beach and spa resort is nearby. A wide selection of ferry services, available from Rijeka, serve the islands and medieval towns up and down the Dalmatian Coast making it the ideal departure point for a two or multicentre holiday.
