Explore Buje
Known as the sentinel of Istria, owing to its hilltop location some 10km inland from the Adriatic Sea, Buje has a rich history as a Roman and Venetian settlement prior to medieval times. ; traces of life in the region date back to prehistoric times. On the Istrian peninsula, and close to the Italian border, Buje was part of Italy between the first and second world wars. Since 1954 it has been part of Croatia. With its Baroque style, narrow streets and fine central square, the old town is a superb example of medieval architecture combined with the strong Venetian Renaissance influences, common to rest of the region. Being situated on a hill, the old town offers views of the surrounding scenery, dominated by Mediterranean flora, vineyards, and olive groves. A more modern town has also grown up beside Buje's historic centre.
