The best Caribbean beaches
Hannah Kent
A Caribbean holiday is a magnet for beach-lovers, and appealing stretches of sand are a feature of all our Caribbean beachside properties.
And yet there are so many beaches worthy of your consideration for a day trip of swimming, snorkelling or strolling. From perfectly seductive ribbons of powder white sand to deserted bays accessible only by boat, here’s a round-up of some of the Caribbean’s very best beaches.
Antigua
Location scouts for Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise settled on St Vincent & The Grenadines. The beaches here are low-key, often deserted and seemingly untouched. The nearby reefs are teeming with colourful fish. The islands, steeped in sailing and pirate history, offer peaceful, secluded, predominantly white-sand beaches, and a relaxed pace of life.
Dominican Republic
Blessed with warm waters all year round, the Dominican Republic’s beaches offer an idyllic Caribbean seascape for sunseekers. The beaches along the coastline from Punta Cana to Uvero Alto are some of the best in the Caribbean, with their powder soft, white sand and warm aquamarine waters.
St Lucia
Renowned for a wide variety of beaches St Lucia has a beach for everyone. The beaches to the north of the island are composed of golden sand and are generally a little busier than those of the south, where volcanic beaches of a more silver coloured sand predominate. Backed by lush rainforest the quieter beaches here offer great snorkelling and diving opportunities.
If beaches are important to your holiday enjoyment, then Antigua makes a very strong case as your destination of choice. Although just 14 miles long by 11 miles wide this beautiful Leeward island has over 350 soft powdery sand beaches all of which are open to the public.
Grenada
Grenada is blessed with more than forty beaches of immaculate sand bordering crystal clear waters. The beaches here are idyllic and uncrowded, ranging from long stretches of pristine sand to intimate coves and bays backed by tropical rainforest, and offer unforgettable swimming and snorkelling.
St Kitts & Nevis
The best beaches on St Kitts are on its south eastern peninsula, with pale sands, idyllic clear waters and a laidback atmosphere. Many of the island’s most appealing restaurants and bars are by the beach, and there’s a lively atmosphere at the weekend. The beaches on Nevis are rarely crowded: the finest are found along the west coast where the water is clear and snorkellers can find fish, turtles, vivid corals and historic relics to admire.
Barbados
Atlantic outlier Barbados has some of the most varied beachscapes of the Caribbean: dramatic and wild east coast beaches, cliffs and coves to the north, the sheltered waters of the Caribbean Sea to the west and the excellent and entertaining mild sea swell conditions to the south.
