La Manga del Mar Menor translated as the sandbar, or sleeve, of the minor sea, accurately describes the 22km long by 100m wide spit which separates the Mediterranean from the saltwater lagoon of Mar Menor, itself stretching from Cabo de Palos in the south to Punta del Mojón in the north.

Originally a bay open to the sea, volcanic reefs at either end gradually caused sand and sediment to be deposited, eventually forming an isthmus of dunes and long beaches although natural water channels, golas, continue to allow Mediterranean waters to flow into the lagoon. Interestingly, the large sheltered lagoon can be five degrees warmer than the Mediterranean Sea in summer and, because of the warm temperatures and due to high mineral concentrations in the salt pools, initial visitors were drawn to the area in the early 20th century.
