Sardinia overview

Sardinian beach

The Mediterranean's second-largest island boasts a combination of a peerless Mediterranean climate, white, sandy beaches and clear turquoise waters. Choose between the sophisticated northern coast or the south which boasts one of the best family resorts in Europe.

Cagliari, Sardinia's capital, boasts lively cafés, bars, restaurants and shops plus the delightful old quarter of Castello with its medieval watchtowers and imposing cathedral. Santa Margherita di Pula boasting a superb sandy beach is close to Cagliari on the southern tip of the island, and Chia, with its scenic coastline features a plethora of sandy coves.

The north of the island boasts Costa Smeralda with 50km of sandy beaches and, right in its heart, the sophistication of Porto Cervo, with its marina, luxurious boutiques and fantastic nightlife where the international jet set come to mingle.

Sardines, or pilchards, are a group of several types of small, oily fish related to herrings. Sardines were named after the island of Sardinia, where they were once in abundance. Generally it is considered that if the fish is under 10cm long it is classed as a sardine, and if longer it is classed as a pilchard. Canned sardines may actually be sprats or herrings but have acquired the generic term ‘sardines’ because the canning process was first developed in Sardinia.

Sardinia sightseeing

Deep sea diving

Alghero

A popular seaside resort with a Catalan heritage evident in the town’s architecture, in particular within the old fortified village with its ancient Spanish ramparts. Organised boat trips to Neptune’s Grotto, a series of subterranean caverns, leave from Alghero and lovely walks can be undertaken along the coastal area from the town.

Protected areas & National Parks

There are several protected areas and national parks in Sardinia with Gennargentu, Sette Fratelli, Monte Arcosu and the National Park of the Archipelago della Maddalena among the more noteworthy. The Archipelago della Maddalena consists of no less than 60 islands and islets with two of the islands permanently inhabited, Caprera and La Maddalena, where high fortifications provide great views of the entire area.

Bue Marina Cave

Among one of the best known caves in Sardinia is Bue Marino. Named after the Mediterranean monk seal, these limestone cliffs boast a cave with huge chambers and passages, rich in stalactites and stalagmites as well as engravings on the walls from the Neolithic period.

Scenic Trains

Trenino Verde (little green train) is a little known narrow-gauge railway providing three scenic routes, from Palau to Tempio, Bosa to Macomer and Arbatax to Mandas; meandering through a beautifully green and unspoilt landscape, up rugged mountains and through lush forests of the interior, past crystal clear lakes and along coastlines.

Sardinia cuisine

Villa Del Parco

The island offers a wide range of restaurants, from pizzerias to fine dining establishments as well as Agriturismo (farm) restaurants usually serving typical Sardinian specialities. Using the very freshest ingredients Sardinian cooking uses fresh fish, meat, vegetables, olive oil and aromatic spices to create some wonderful regional varieties on the Italian mainland cuisine.

Bread, pasta and rice features highly on the menu and traditionally pasta and rice are served as a first course with regional classics such as malloreddus alla campidanese, typical Sardinian pasta with sausage or cheese and saffron, or riso alla pescatora, rice with prawns, octopus and mussels. A great variety of bread can found with the most renowned being carasau, also known as music paper due to its thinness and civriaxiu, a charcoal baked bread.

Cervo Hotel Costa Smeralda Resort Traditional Dough making

There is a plentiful supply of fresh fish and seafood with catfish, mullet, tuna, lobster and sea urchins popular choices. A selection of aromatic herbs and spices such as juniper berries, saffron, myrtle and wild fennel all play an important role in Sardinian cooking with myrtle used to infuse succulent spit-roasted suckling pig for which Sardinian cuisine is well-known, with other popular meats being boar, sheep and goat.

Almond is the main ingredients in many of the cakes, as is fresh ricotta and pecorino cheese in many of the desserts with fruit including prickly pear, cherries, figs, oranges and peaches readily available throughout the island.
