El Gouna sightseeing
The surrounding area of El Gouna offers a variety of excursions, including snorkeling trips to Giftun and Gobal Islands, famous for their seagrass beds and mangroves, and the national park at Mahmeya Island, boasting one of the best beaches on the Red Sea.
A supper safari involves taking a four wheel drive vehicle into the desert before changing to four-legged transport. Dinner is served under a starlit desert sky with telescopes available to take a much closer look at the night sky.
Further afield, you can experience more of Egypt's historical, archaeological and cultural treasures with a day trip (by air) to Cairo. One of the greatest capitals in the world and home to nearly 20 million people, a visit to Cairo includes all of the city's most dramatic landmarks, the Pyramids and the Sphinx, The Mosque of Muhammad Ali and the Egyptian Museum.
Alternatively opt for a day trip (also by air) to explore Luxor. Formerly the ancient city of Thebes, it is set against spectacular desert landscapes of the Kharga Oasis and features the Valley of the Kings, the Hatshepsut Temple and the Colossi of Memnon on the West Bank, and the Karnak and Luxor Temples on the East.
Diving and Snorkelling
Catering for all levels of abilities, the area surrounding El Gouna boasts over 40 dive sites that can easily be reached within one to two hours on the many dive boats. With spectacular, sheltered coral reefs ideal for learning to dive, wonderful drift and wall dives, complete wrecks waiting to be explored, and even a chance to encounter dolphins and turtles, this is a fabulous base for discovering the Red Sea. Some excellent wreck diving can be found including the ship graveyard of Sha'ab Abu Nuhas in the Straits of Gubal, plus the legendary wreck of World War II supply ship, Thistlegorm.
Golf
Designed by Fred Couples and Gene Bates the El Gouna 18-hole championship golf course has wide fairways, bunkers, desert rough, five different tees and, with the majority of holes hugging the water, the course provides a challenge for any player. Facilities are second to none with the Clubhouse offering a gym, plunge pools, sauna, Turkish bath, spa, bar and fine dining in the La Rotisserie Restaurant. Additional facilities include an Aqua driving range with a practice area and a Pro shop. A shuttle bus service runs between the Golf Club and the resort hotels.
